Julep Dots

So this was waiting for me in the mail when I got home...

...my April Julep Maven selections. And I have to say that my mind was completely blown when I saw these in person.  From left to right in the photo --

Eden - violet crelly (cream and jelly hybrid)
Abbie - sunshine yellow cream
Mackenzie - grass green shimmer
Ally - indigo blue shimmer
Kaylen - neon orange cream
Avery - neon pink cream

I knew exactly what I wanted to do with these because I needed to use them ALL. RIGHT. NOW.

I grabbed my favorite base from my hoard...

OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls. This is a ever-so-slightly greyed out white. I consider it a white without the blindness.

And I created this...

...using a medium and small sized dotting tool. For those of you not familiar with a dotting tool, I got mine here. Anything can make dots though if you don't have the tools - a mechanical pencil, paper clip, push pin, etc. I had no specific plan. I just started putting random dots of different sizes in three colors on each nail. My right hand is a completely different color combination using all the same colors.

As always, I was very impressed with the Julep polishes. They cover well and are highly pigmented. As is normal for a neon polish, the purple, orange and pink dried with a satin finish (not quite matte but not shiny). I let the dots dry for a couple of minutes before covering the whole thing with Seche Vite.

I really hope that you enjoyed this manicure, and that maybe it inspires you to try something crazy with your own nails!

May 25th is the date that I celebrate ONE YEAR of blogging about nails and polish. I am planning a spectacular giveaway, so please keep reading and watching.

Nail Care Favorites!

This post is all about my favorite nail, cuticle and hand products. I am not being sponsored in any way. I have tried a lot of products over the last year and these are the ones that I keep going back to over and over again.

First off, Julep Hand and Cuticle Stick. This looks like a very large lip balm, and I pack it around in my bag to moisturize on the run. It has a very light scent, which is nice, and it is not oily at all, so that makes it perfect for my cuticles when I am on the go.

Julep Essential Cuticle Oil comes in a rollerball applicator. It smells sooooooo good and is the ultimate for "before bed" application to keep my cuticles soft and healthy. I also like to massage this stuff into my cuticles while watching The Vampire Diaries. Keep Calm and Moisturize On?

This is my new favorite hand cream. Julep Rock Star. Again, it has a very pleasant but light scent. This stuff really soaks in and lasts even through hand washings. I use this at work where I wash my hands a bajillion times a day.

To keep my nails strong and break-free, I alternate between Julep Oxygen Nail Treatment and OPI Nail Envy Matte. I LOVE the OPI Nail Envy, but sometimes I like the look of the Julep, which gives your nails a very faint pink color. Sort of like foundation for nails. I use the OPI Nail Envy as a base coat for all my manis, and it really keeps your nails strong. Worth every penny. If I am not wearing polish, I always have one of these products on my nails.

To soften my cuticles and to remove any polish stains, I use Orly Cutique. Before I polish, I put this all over my nails and cuticles and then push back my cuticles with an orange stick. Then I wash my hands with soap and water to remove any product before I start to polish.

My favorite polish remover is the Zoya Remove +. I always wipe my nails with this before I polish to remove any soap or oil on my nail. I buy it in a HUGE bottle and then refill my pump as needed. It has a chemical/lavender scent to it that is sort of weird, but it really removes polish well without damaging my nails.

On my nails, I use OPI Nail Envy as a base coat, but on my toes I use CND Stickey. It dries rather tacky and polish really sticks to it.

After doing my post on QDTC's here, I now use Sally Hansen Insta-Dri QDTC on all my manis and pedis. It works great and the bonus is that it is inexpensive.

To file and shape my nails, I use a crystal nail file. I got mine on eBay for $8 but you can really get them anywhere. They are a very fine grit which is perfect for natural nails and they never wear out. They do break though (as I found out in my suitcase) so they are probably not the best for travelling. My nails are much stronger since I started using this with fewer peels.

There is one last product that I want to share with you. Lush Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter. This is super greasy and smells like a mixture of gasoline and lemons, but it works amazingly if you have super dry cuticles and lots of hangnails. Smear some of this mess on your cuticles before bed and you will wake up with model hands. No joke. Be prepared to sleep alone though. It even repels my cats.

Well, that is it. My favorites. I would love to hear from you about what products you love and cannot do without. Feel free to post in the comments about what you are currently loving!

My one year Blog-aversary is coming up quickly! A year has gone by so fast! What do you think we should do to celebrate? Giveaway? I will keep you posted!

Easter Nails! KBShimmer Where My Peeps At

For those of you who still believe in the Easter Bunny, here is the perfect Easter nail polish! KBShimmer Where My Peeps At (love the name!) is a egg-yolk colored sheer base full of circle glitter in blue, pink, green, gold and a few others.

As with all the KBShimmer nail polishes I have tried, it went on smoothly in 2 coats, without fishing for glitter, and dried very quickly. One of my favorite things about KBShimmer is how quickly their polish dries considering it is packed full of glitter.

Here are 2 coats of Where My Peeps At over 1 coat of OPI Matte Nail Envy and topped with 1 coat of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri QDTC.

A macro shot of my nail to show you the circle glitter! Circle glitter is the newest craze in glitter nail polish. You will be seeing a lot more of this coming up.

A macro shot of the bottle to show you all the different colors of glitter!

KBShimmer polishes are available here in Canada and here in the US. I would recommend that you follow Harlow and Co on Facebook and Twitter for updates. These polishes sell out fast.

Have a wonderful Easter weekend everyone!

Color Club Eternal Beauty

OMG I love the new Color Club Halo Hues for this year! The colors that they released for 2013 are BLOW. YOUR. MIND. stunning! Now...it is no secret that I love purple and I love holos so here is a total beauty that I cannot stop staring at. This is Eternal Beauty 2 coats over Nfu Oh Aqua Base and topped with Sally Hansen Insta-Dri.

This linear holo went on super smooth without any bald patches like holos tend to leave. Honestly, in the sun, this casts rainbows all over the place!  Last years colors are available here and the 2013 colors will be arriving mid-March. Buy all of them.

China Glaze Keep Calm, Paint On

Happy Family Day! Here in Alberta this is supposed to be a holiday to spend with your family; promoting togetherness and all that. I thought that I would start out the day with a blog post!

The polish today is from the China Glaze Spring 2013 Avant Garden Collection - Keep Calm, Paint On.

Firstly, I love the name. So cute. I was really excited about this one, but as I was doing my nails last night, my excited morphed into pure frustration. The color is lovely and very spring-like. It is a sea-foam green with a slight silver shimmer that almost makes it look pearly. Not pearly like 80's Grandma nail polish, but beautiful. The formula is were it went very wrong.

The first coat was thin and looked so patchy. I thought that would be OK, so I painted another thin coat over that and it still looked terrible. So a third thicker coat later and I ended up with a lumpy, bubble filled nail. Here is the photographic evidence...

This is 2 thin coats and 1 thicker coat over 1 coat of OPI Nail Envy and topped with 1 coat of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri. You can see the lumps and bumps in the macro shot.

I had seen some really beautiful swatches of this polish so I went ahead and purchased it. I did not have the same experience at all.  I have seen other reviews of this online since then and they had the bumps and bubbles as well. Maybe there are some bad bottles out there? I refuse to believe that China Glaze has disappointed me!

I plan on thinning this one a bit and trying again.

Valentine's Day Nails

Truth time - I hate Valentine's Day. Really. It just seems like such a stupid holiday. I've never been dumped on Valentine's Day, so I can't blame my dislike on that, but it just seems like a made-up holiday to make single people feel lonely. I can do without New Year's too, but I digress...

On to the pictures! I don't usually do nail art, but I felt inspired today so here it is...

I will go into more detail about the polishes I used, but my thumb is gold as well. The polka dots are done with a medium dotting tool and I free-hand painted the hearts using a nail art brush.

I used OPI Nail Envy Matte as a base coat, Zoya Blaze (red holo) 2 coats, Zoya Purity (white creme), Julep Sienna (gold shimmer) 1 coat and Julep Vivien (gold glitter) 1 coat. Blaze covers well in 2 coats, but the Julep polishes never cease to amaze me! They cover so well in 1 coat! They make the best layering polishes!

I painted Sally Hansen Insta-Dri over everything before I painted the white and then another coat after the white had set for a couple of minutes. Who says your nails have to be all matchy matchy?

For those of you who like Valentine's Day, have a great one! I may not like it but my nails look good!
